On April 4, the Office of Management Budget (OMB) officially approved renewal of the Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) (Form CMS-R-131) that labs must get patients to sign to bill them for services that Medicare doesn’t cover. Labs must use the new ABN starting on June 30, 2023, when the old version expires.
Question: What’s the difference between the old and the new ABN?
Answer: Just one thing—the expiration date. The new ABN expires on January 31, 2026.
Takeaway: Starting June 30, be sure that the ABN you use lists 01/31/2026 and not 06/30/2023 as the expiration date.
