Cameron S. Hill, a shareholder in Baker Donelson’s Chattanooga, TN office, will be presenting with Baker Donelson senior counsel Robert Mazer on “Payment Disputes with Commercial Insurers for COVID Testing Services.” Cameron and Robert will describe the legal remedies potentially available to clinical labs that have not been fully paid for COVID testing by commercial insurance companies, including labs subject to insurers’ attempts to recover payments that were made previously. They’ll discuss applicable payment rules and legal issues that may control the outcome of related disputes.

Q: How did you get started in your career?
A: I graduated from law school in 1995 and had the good fortune of serving as a federal law clerk to a United States District Court Judge who helped anchor my thoughts about practicing law.
Q: What made you choose this career?
A: Two of my parents’ best friends were great, fun, smart people. They were attorneys, a woman and a man, and I really enjoyed spending time with them, hearing their stories, seeing how they interacted with people and watching how they approached questions and problems from an objective perspective.
Q: What is the biggest lesson learned in your professional career?
A: Be responsive. Be attentive. Use people’s names. Explain when and why there are differences between what you guess, what you think, and what you know.
Q: Tell us about a great book, movie, song, or TV show you’ve enjoyed recently.
A: If it is related to J.R.R. Tolkien, I will read it, watch it, or listen to it…over and over and over.
Q: If you had a different work-related role, what would it be and why?
A: I like to teach. I welcome the chance to share information with people. I enjoy helping people learn about something or how to do something.
Q: What is the biggest work-related challenge you’ve faced? How did you overcome it?
A: Tackling big projects (trials, depositions, important briefs), which I overcame by learning that fear/doubt and starting can be the biggest hurdles to success. Once the process starts, things fall into place, and perspective shines a light on dark corners.
Q: What’s your standard order when you visit a coffee shop?
A: Depending on the time of day, either black coffee or a simple latte.
Q: What is one important skill you think all leaders should have?
A: Empathy.
Q: What kinds of hobbies or interests do you have outside of your job?
A: Our family raises beef cattle on a beautiful piece of land in the mountains, and my siblings and I are enjoying trying to keep the operation going.
