Q: How did you get started in your career?
A: I started my current career after 27 years in the diagnostic space. I leveraged my network and relationships and built a thriving recruiting and staffing firm.
Q: What made you choose this career?
A: A number of my friends and colleagues encouraged me to start my own recruiting company because they saw firsthand how well-connected I was and that I always kept in contact with people within the industry.
Q: What are you most excited about regarding your Lab Institute talk?
A: The opportunity to share ideas on how to help overcome one of the biggest obstacles in our business today—the shortage of qualified technical staff.
Q: What is a typical day at work like for you?
A: I start every day with a nice three-to-five mile walk with my dogs. I review my daily activities and start reaching out to clients and/or candidates. Recruiting is my passion, and it is something I truly enjoy. They say if you enjoy what you do, you will never work a day in your life; that is how I view my current endeavor.
Q: What five words best describe you?
A: Passionate, driven, competitive, energetic, and fun.
Q: What was the best day of your professional career? What made it stand out?
A: The best day of my career was when I was in the Navy, and I flew off the Admiral’s helo [helicopter] after a six-month deployment to the Med [Mediterranean Sea] to watch my first child Steven be born. Timing is everything.
Q: What is the biggest lesson learned in your professional career?
A: Take care of your people, and they will take care of you.
Q: Tell us about a great book, movie, song, or TV show you’ve enjoyed recently.
A: Top Gun.
Q: If you had a different work-related role, what would it be and why?
A: Nothing, as I love what I do.
Q: What is the biggest work-related challenge you’ve faced? How did you overcome it?
A: Raising $75 million to start American Pathology Partners. My partner and I were fortune to make a pitch to Marty Rash, a well-known healthcare executive in Nashville. He liked us and our energy and made the introduction to global venture capital firm NEA. The rest is history.
Q: What’s your standard order when you visit a coffee shop?
A: Black coffee.
Q: What’s your best story to tell at a cocktail party?
A: Probably the explosion on my ship that claimed the lives of my 47 shipmates. It was an awful accident, but the captain and crew came together to battle the fire and explosions to save the ship and the rest of the crew. I lost a lot of great friends and shipmates that day. Life is not all full of joy, but you learn a great deal about yourself and others when challenged with adversity.
Q: What is one important skill all leaders should have?
A: The ability to lead people. It sounds simple, but many fail to execute the basic principles of good leadership.
Q: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of your job?
A: Golf, hiking, biking, working out, and going on my boat.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish in the next few years in your current position?
A: Continue to build upon the strong foundation we have created at Vanguard Healthcare Staffing.
Q: What do you like most about attending/participating in events like the G2 Intelligence Lab Institute?
A: I am a networker, and enjoy seeing my friends at the G2 conference. This was always a favorite conference of mine to attend.
