As G2 Intelligence’s 2022 Lab Institute Virtual Event approaches, get to know the legal, laboratory, and healthcare industry professionals who will be presenting in November.
Joyce Gresko, an attorney of the Health Care Group and the Legislative & Public Policy Team at Alston & Bird’s Washington, DC, office, will be presenting on “PAMA: Where Is It Now, and Where Is It Going?” Joyce will provide an update on the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA), how it affects labs now, and how it may affect them in the future. She’ll cover how Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule rates are established, why it matters to your lab, what your obligations are for reporting private payor information to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and how Congress may change PAMA going forward.
Q: How did you get started in your career?
A: I worked as a fundraiser and manager on political campaigns for a dozen years.
Q: What made you choose this career?
A: I became a lawyer because I wanted to think harder than I had to while working on political campaigns!
Q: What is a typical day at work like for you?
A: I spend part of each day counseling individual laboratories on coding, coverage, reimbursement, and fraud and abuse issues, and part of the day working on legislative and regulatory policy issues affecting laboratories, primarily with the American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA), for which I serve as general counsel. I have never had a boring day at work, especially in the past six or seven years with changes to the Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule and COVID.
Q: What is one important skill you think all leaders should have?
A: Humility. Even the most experienced leaders have things to learn from those around them, and the best leaders open their eyes and ears to take in that learning.
Q: What do you like most about attending/participating in events like the G2 Intelligence Lab Institute?
A: I enjoy meeting and collaborating with others who are as interested in the laboratory industry as I am. Clinical lab testing is a relatively small piece of the overall healthcare puzzle, yet, it is the foundation for so many medical decisions and treatments. I love learning about new testing methodologies, different business models, and what’s on the horizon.
